This is excellent. I’m so intrigued by this guy. I want to know his whole story, at the same time I don’t exactly trust him, you know?

Depending on the context, I would imagine you’d have to keep reinventing yourself over and over to fit the various time periods you find yourself in. This seems to be a case where losing (some) memories might work in your favor with respect to self-preservation.
